Scout: the fall 09 collection!

bunny

Scout is a relatively new entrant to the organic cotton baby and kids clothing world and we are happy to be the only baby and kids store in Tulsa, make that Oklahoma, who carries them. Fall 09 debuts their 5th collection of fresh organic fairtrade design. There is so much we love about Scout! First that they are original in their design, when you see a Scout dress, tee, or hoodie you will know it. They are so very artful and imaginative with the most spectacular color pallets… they are truly doing something a little different. Babies and kids can be rough on clothes, a well know fact to the design duo at Scout, thus, incorporated into their design is a kid friendly durability.

And now a bit from behind the scenes. The dyes Scout uses for its organic cotton baby and kids clothing are low impact dyes…  meaning that they are free from heavy metals and formaldehyde almost always used in the conventional dying process. The factory they use in India is certified by an independent third party to be fair labor. Scout baby and kids clothes are made with ultra soft 100% GOTS certified organic cotton.

Did you know that conventional cotton crops account for 25% of the worlds pesticides? Maybe you are just becoming aware of chemicals, our exposure, and our kids exposure. If we just replace conventional cotton with organic cotton there would be a multi billion reduction in the amount of chemicals being released into our environments. Maybe you don’t live near a cotton crop, but there are many families and children who do and I for one don’t want to be responsible for the numerous adverse health effects that inflict those living near or working on conventional cotton farms. Many pesticides are know carcinogens and neurotoxins, according to the World Health Organization 100’s of thousands of people each year are hospitalized with pesticide poisoning and 1000’s die. For those who do not die, persistent symptoms of a pesticide poisoning can range from mild nerve loss to severe mental impairment to cancer. Those most at risk are pregnant women and young children. In 2007 a study was published in Environmental Health Perspectives showed a correlation between maternal proximity to conventional agricultural farms while pregnant and autism; basically the closer a mother lived to one of these farms the greater the likelihood that they would have a child diagnosed with autism.

When you buy organic whether it be cotton, soybeans, apples, or grapes you are supporting a cleaner world for your family and countless others across the globe.

green-dollhouse

We absolutely LOVE The Green Dollhouse by Plan Toys! It is designed to help children learn how to live in harmony with nature through role play and acting out stories about living responsibly. Children will learn how appliances in the Green Dollhouse assist their daily life without damaging the environment and how electricity can be generated from alternative natural sources such as the sun and wind. This house is a wonderfully educational toy that will inspire your kids to meet the challenges that they will face as adults. What a great tool to open dialogues and get them to thinking sustainably.

dsc03539

After a year of listening to our customers, Lundeby’s Eco Baby has expanded it’s product lines and offerings!

The new ECO baby + kids can now be found in Center 1 at 3516 South Peoria Avenue.

All the same eco friendly and non-toxic criteria is now being applied to clothing sizes up to size 8y and a wider selection of feeding gear, furniture, carriers, and toys which can be found in the store and on the new ECO baby + kids website www.ecobabyandkids.com. In the midst of all the changes the blog was put on hold and now that the dust is beginning to settle we have lots of catching up to do… research, events, and product introductions are coming soon.

Change is in the Air

You can feel it, or at least I can, life in Tulsa, or at least on Brookside is changing and it is not just because I am turning 30. A new business is going in next to the Crusty Croissant, the old Braum’s on Peoria is getting a new face lift and will soon be inhabited by a sure to be delicious Bagel shop. Even Lundeby’s Eco Baby is caught up in this whirlwind as are some other shops on Brookside. Over the next month we will be moving to a new location, expanding upon our products, and possibly adjusting the name a bit to reflect the expansion. The momentum beyond Tulsa seems to be increasing as well as I have had SO much research to blog about, but so little time to do it. April is a month full of life and there are many events around town that should not be missed, not to mention the opening of the farmer’s markets! Stay tuned for updates!

Thank you Tasha!

Just as I was crying over my lost blogs and the time and energy it was going to take to recreate them Natasha of Tasha does Tulsa, a fantastic blog documenting what is happening in Tulsa, came to the rescue. All thanks to Tasha for helping me get over this, the latest bump in the road of trying to promote health and safety through sustainability. So now I can get on with life and blog away.

Solar Energy Web Hosting

Solar Energy Host Logo

We have been experiencing some turbulence with our website which is extremely frustrating. At this point many would have switched servers, but we are hanging in there a little longer. You may ask why, well the Lundeby’s Eco Baby website is hosted by Solar Energy which uses renewable energy to directly power their servers. We believe so much in supporting sustainability that we truly want this partnership to work. The reason for the recent turmoil on our website is due to the company making some changes and upgrading so we are going to give it another go with Solar Energy Host.

Here we go Again

I just logged in to find several blogs missing. Even more disappointing is that I have not backed up the site in a while. I do feel that the last few posts had great content so I will take the time to rewrite: Now for some Organic Gardening, The Kid-Safe Chemical Act, and the Ergo Review. I am sorry for the trouble please check back soon to read and comment on these topics.

Emergency Infant Services

This time of year is especially hard on families with young children. It is wonderful to sponsor a family overseas, but let us not turn our back on those in need of help in our own community. Sure donating a cow or a goat to them might not be as helpful as it is to those in rural areas, but there are items you can donate that will help. Those who suffer the most during troubled times are often infants and young children which is why we have joined forces with Emergency Infant Services. We will be collecting gently used clothing (through size 7) and unopened baby food and formula for the familes receiving help through Emergency Infant Services (which is up 75% from this time last year). Additionally, for this week only save 15% off luxuriously soft organic cotton baby and toddler clothing, organic and natural toys, organic bedding, and accessories when you bring in a donation for Emergency Infant Services.

Taking time for Gratitude

With the opening of the store and our involvement in the Tulsa Entrepreneurial Spirit Award my attention has primarily gone to the business and getting it on stable footing. There have been so many lessons so far and I am looking forward to learning even more in the future. I can’t believe that it has been 8 months since we opened our doors and that we are getting ready to go through the Holiday Season. It is such a good time to take a step back and truly appreciate our customers for helping us make it to this point as well as the support of family and friends who have helped me to maintain some level of sanity. Thank you all so much and have a HAPPY HAPPY Thanksgiving!
